Enhancing High-Throughput Livestock Genomics at Scale
Challenge: LIC processes over 1.5 million animal samples annually, including 500,000+ for genomic evaluation. The laboratory needed to increase throughput, reduce hands-on time and plastic waste, and lower per-extraction costs — all without compromising DNA yield or purity.
Solution: Azora Biosciences developed a customized magnetic bead-based DNA extraction kit featuring a novel single-wash buffer, reduced reagent volumes, and pre-measured reusable packaging. The workflow was modelled and optimized to integrate seamlessly with LIC’s automated extraction and Illumina genotyping platforms.
Outcome: The custom solution reduced wash steps from three to one while maintaining high DNA quality (260/280 ratio 1.88; ~380 ng/µl yield) and delivered measurable operational gains — including 260 hours of labor savings per year, 565 kg reduction in plastic waste, and significant cost and carbon footprint reductions.
